Introduction
Developing countries face rapid urbanization and urban development which creates huge demand for urban transport development. With the limitation of road networks and costs, many countries require advices and technical support on the modalities, techniques and financing instruments for developing effective urban public transport systems.
This special issue examines rapid urban public transport systems, with special reference to Bus Rapid Transit system, Rapid Light Rail Transit System. It examines the demands for urban public transport, plan and design of rapid urban public transport systems. The cost comparison of different rapid urban public transport systems. The financing and investment issues of rapid urban public transport systems. The management and operational issues of rapid urban public transport systems. Case studies of rapid urban public transport systems in the world. The status and challenges of developing rapid urban public transport systems in Africa. How to address the challenges of urban public transport systems in Africa.
How to enhance mobility and sustainability of urban transport with rapid urban public transport systems. How to design better urban and suburban connectivity with smart, intermodal and energy‐efficient rapid urban transport systems. The cost-effectiveness of rapid urban public transport systems with different types of urban development patterns and city sizes. How to co-finance rapid urban public transport systems with central governments, state governments, municipal governments and the private sectors.
The impacts of different modes of rapid urban public transport systems. How to optimize the use of rapid urban public transport systems.
Aims and Scope:
  1. Assessing urban public transport needs in developing countries, particularly in Africa.
  2. Assessing the different models of rapid urban public transport systems, particularly the Bus Rapid Transit/Transport system, the Rapid Light Rail Transport System. Their advantages, effectiveness and disadvantages under different types of cities and conditions.
  3. Examining the different modalities of pricing and charging for rapid urban public transport systems.
  4. Case studies of good practices in rapid urban public transport system, particularly the Bus Rapid Transit/Transport system, the Rapid Light Rail Transport System and etc.
  5. Financing issues of rapid urban public transport systems.
  6. Assessing impacts and benefits of rapid urban public transport systems.
  7. Assessing challenges of rapid urban public transport systems.
  8. Technical aspects of developing rapid urban public transport systems.
  9. Plan and Design of rapid urban public transport network.
  10. Management and operational issues of rapid urban public transport system.
  11. Challenges in developing rapid urban public transport systems in African cities and how to mitigate them.
  12. How to optimize the use of rapid urban public transport systems.
