Small molecules have played a major role in the intellectual and experimental development of organic chemistry. Small molecules have been very important in the preclinical and clinical development phases of drugs. From the first extraction of isolated salicin from willow bark, the great majority of drugs available on the market today are small molecules. Small molecule drugs still account for about 90 percent of the therapeutics in today’s pharmaceutical market. According to Medscape, in 2014 five of the top ten selling drugs were small molecule drugs. A working small molecule drug takes years of research and development, but this is not the only role they play. Small molecules are very important in shortening the drug pathway from drug candidate discovery to clinical trials. What is needed is a change in the way a chemist thinks about small molecule drug design which can increase the probability of identifying a compound with suitable drug-like properties, decreases the number of analogs to be made, and can be easily applied by the practicing medicinal chemist on a day to day basis a more prospective approach.
We invite researchers to contribute original research articles as well as review articles focused on the synthesis and biological evaluation of small molecules, including heterocycles and development of novel protocols, which may have potential application in the medicinal chemistry.

  2. Design and synthesis of molecules of biological interest
  3. Drug discovery and medicinal chemistry
  4. Synthetic methodologies towards biological applications
  5. Synthesis/isolation of natural products and their derivatizations
