Introduction
Geotechnical engineers deal with uncertainties by recognizing that risk and uncertainty are inevitable.In most cases, the uncertainties inherent in geotechnical problems are considered by applying theobservational method to maintain control over them. These methods suffer from some shortcomings,especially in situations when the critical behavior can not be observed until too late to make changes. Inthis cases, the designer must rely on a calculated risk. Although prominent engineers have longemphasized the role of the calculated risk in geotechnical engineering, the literature contains relativelyfew examples of evaluation of risk for geotechnical problems considering the performance quality ofeach of non-deterministic methods, comparing the applicability of different methods with differentmathematical concepts and proposing practical recommendations regarding the foregoing cases.
The aim of this special issue is to highlight the newest researches in the area of uncertainty, reliability,and risk analysis in geotechnical engineering problems. Thus, we plan to publish a set of high-qualitytopical collections (special issues) on cross-cutting themes of employing reliability and risk analysis in geotechnical problems such as Slope engineering, Excavations, Soil Improvement, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (e.g. Liquefaction), Deep Foundations, Semi-Deep Foundations and other fields in geotechnical engineering which deal with uncertainties in soil parameters, geometry and etc. All non-deterministic methods of analysis includingprobabilistic and non-probabilistic techniques are welcome. Practice-oriented papers and case studies are particularly welcomed and encouraged.
